ABOUT EMILY ALDEN

Emily is a dancer & choreographer who works across dance & theatre, live & digital formats & communities.

Originally from the Midlands Emily trained in Contemporary Dance at Bretton Hall College of Arts in Yorkshire & is now based in Cornwall. She has worked extensively as a dancer on touring and site-based productions including WildWorks, Cscape, Kneehigh & Simon Birch, performing in works by Rosemary Lee, Emma Rice, Yael Flexer, & Agnieszka Blonska. Her touring and artistic research has taken her across the UK, to the Spoleto Festival (USA), Norway, Northern Ireland, Belgium and Italy.

Her dance for camera work with filmmaker Brett Harvey (Kneehigh, o-region, Lucasfilm) has been screened worldwide with her ongoing photographic work exploring people, place and nature, much like her choreographic work.

She is currently developing new work In My Head (2019/21) exploring everyday sound & hearing loss with Sound Designer Daniel Hayes (Alesandra Seutin, Tony Adigunn, Caroline Bowditch), supported by Arts Council England. As a reaction to the Pandemic she has created Audio Moves, an ongoing series of analogue & digital projects connecting people through sound and visuals.

Emily is an Associate Artist of Hall for Cornwall, Associate Lecturer of Falmouth University, a recipient of the Artists International Development Fund (Arts Council England and British Council), a Developing Your Creative Practice grant (Arts Council England), a member of the international networking group through the Arts Access Festival Forum (Goethe Institut and British Council) and curator and producer of the Dance Master Workshop Programme #12.

Camping

Cost : £10p/n per person for a basic pitch, toilets and showers - pay cash on arrival
Location : The site is approx 20 mins drive from Heligan gardens so access to your own vehicle is highly recommended. There are no public transport options to commute between the campsite and the gardens.
How to book your spot : Please email getinvolved@hallforcornwall.org.uk
Relevant Info : This is rustic camping at its best! (so no electric points available), there will be a fire-pit for fireside chats, and plenty of space for everyone who wishes to camp for as long or short a stay as you wish to be accommodated. Directions etc will be emailed to you after booking.

Travel

If traveling from out of the county, it’s highly recommended to have access to a car as the nature of working in Cornwall often means a car is unavoidably the best form of transport.

  • Please see this web link for directions to the gardens travelling by car, train, bike or on foot

  • Car parking at Heligan Gardens is free

What to wear & bring whatever the weather

When it shines, it’s practically tropical so bring sunscreen, bug spray, sunnies and swimsuits! When it rains (which hopefully it won’t) it can be very damp, so bring a waterproof, some comfy socks and spare dance kit. Whatever the weather, some good footwear is advisable for working outside on uneven ground, along with layers in case the Cornish weather changes its mind quickly (which it often does!).

Food

During the residency you are responsible for your own food and drinks. There is a cafe & restaurant selling hot and cold food in the café at Heligan Gardens as well as Lobbs Farm Shop (but these can be a little pricey!). There are supermarkets a short drive from the campsite in St Austell en route to the Gardens, and the beautiful coastal towns of Mevagissey and Pentewan Sands (great for swimming) have plenty of pubs, restaurants etc.

Please Note: With government guidance now relaxed, we still highly recommend you bring a face covering and sanitiser with you. Please do not attend the residency if you have been asked to self-isolate, or if you develop and display any of these COVID-19 symptoms: a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.
